Arashikage I-Ching Hexagrams

Postby daremo » Fri Jan 23, 2009 5:23 pm

While doing some research for some new backdrops, I noticed that Prof. Onihashi's I-Ching Hexgram is different than the Arashikage Hexagram. I had never noticed this before so I decided to do a quick search for the meanings.

I'm pretty sure the Arashikage hexagram, symbolizing 'completion', has already been discussed before elsewhere. This could describe Snake-Eyes' role with the Arashikage and completing his ninja training. Worth noting is the hexagram's general meaning of good fortune in the beginning, but maybe disorder in the end. This is possibly pointing to the revelation of a new heir and both the death of the Hardmaster and the disbanding (although temporary) of the Arashikage clan.

It turns out that Prof. Onihashi's hexagram symbolizes 'nourishment'. This is quite fitting if you think about how Zartan starts out with bad intentions and then no longer wants anything to with the assassination of Snake-Eyes after he finds his higher purpose in life. Sword-smithing became his nourishment.

I thought this was pretty cool that Larry Hama had picked these hexgrams so fittingly to represent the Arashikage and Prof. Onihashi. Or maybe I'm just reading too much into this...

DDP couldn't even pick their noses right, lol.

Interesting stuff on the I-Ching, Daremo. I enjoy reading about these type of things. Always interesting, unlike Devil's Poo storylines.

I would love to be able to ask this to Larry and see if there is any significance here, or if this is a strange inconsequence or error.

There is some kind of significance here. I did some more digging and found this
According to the poster, the letters page in issue 109 talks about the heaxgrams.
-The letters page also explains the Arashikage I-Ching hexagram. It's meaning: fire over water, which indicates the need for perserverance and caution. Or: "thus, the superior man takes thought of misfortune and arms himself against it in advance". Damn, that's ...100% relevant to the series!

-They also mention that Prof. Onihashi's hexagram was different.

Now I need to go dig out that issue.

Okay... I opened up issue #109 and sure enough, the different i-ching is addressed.. along with a lot of other questions, in a very long letter sent to the editors at the time. Unfortunately, the answers are kind of short to this letter... but here it is, nevertheless

And thus... it is settled!
